We were lucky enough to receive a Fluffy Penguin Company Exclusive AIO diaper in the avocado print to review. I still can’t get over how adorable the avocado print is and I’m super happy we were able to snag one before they were sold out. Fluffy Penguin Exclusives are manufactured by Alva, but having never tried an Alva AIO, this is just a review of the Fluffy Penguin Exclusive.
The Fluffy Penguin diaper is a one-size diaper meant to last from a little bit after birth through potty training. This cloth diaper should comfortably fit around 12 pounds and can probably fit a smaller baby, although it will be bulky. I have no doubts that this will last us through potty training as it seems to run slightly on the larger side.
With AIO diapers that have sewn in inserts, it helps to turn them inside out to dry. Sometimes when I turn diapers inside out, I worry that I’m going to rip them or somehow destroy them, but with this Fluffy Penguin AIO, I never have that worry. The snaps reinforced with extra fabric, so the PUL doesn’t tear.
The fit on this one-size diaper isn’t perfect. As with all one size, it fits awkwardly on smaller babies. Pumpkin is almost 15 pounds, and he’s still pretty little for this diaper. Due to the sewn-in absorbency, you don’t have the option to use a trimmer insert for a smaller baby, although you can add more absorbency for a giant baby. I know that when Pumpkin starts gaining more weight, the fit of this diaper will get better and better, and I’m sure it will fit perfectly when he’s a year old. Even with the larger size though, the absorbency of this diaper is so stellar that we’ve never had a single leak.
Ease of Use
I prefer our AIO’s to have hook and loop closures as opposed to snaps. This feature makes them similar to disposables and helps my husband, or the nanny put them on more comfortable. I wish Fluffy Penguin Company offered their exclusives with hook and loop closures as well, although it seems that Alva doesn’t manufacture any hook and loop diapers, so I understand why they don’t. Even though these have snaps, they are still super easy to use. No stuffing is required (although you can add extra absorbency if you want) and because the insert is sewn in, there are no awkward inserts to fold into the diaper. The only real issue that I have with this diaper is that because it’s so absorbent it takes forever to dry. This adorable avocado diaper takes over 24 hours to line dry, even when turned inside out fully. The drying time kills me because I want Pumpkin to wear it every time he eats avocados, which is every single day.
At $10 for an all in one, the Fluffy Penguin Company exclusives are a pretty good deal. You’d only have to use this diaper 40 times before it becomes cheaper than disposables. Granted, unless you spend $75, you have to pay for shipping, which is $2.70 for a single diaper to ship to my house from them. That’s probably the most reasonable shipping rate I’ve ever encountered and brings your uses up to 51 before this diaper is cheaper than a disposable. Even with the extra cost of shipping, this is still a reasonably priced AIO.
Fluffy Penguin Company introduces exclusives throughout the year to match the upcoming season, but still keeps many of the old exclusive prints in rotation. Many of the photographs are cute, and I like that I can build a stockpile that can change with the seasons. Because these are exclusives (i.e., printed only for Fluffy Penguin Company), I don’t miss the selection of solid colours. You can buy solid colours anywhere. I do wish that some of the prints didn’t sell out so fast. The avocado print AIO sold out within a few days, and while they do have more in stock now, it took them a while to restock. The “It” Happens (the one with the poo emoji) diaper is still out of stock, and I’ve been a little bummed because I wanted to buy that one. Oh well, I’m not going to knock them for having cute prints that so many people want.
The Fluffy Penguin Exclusive AIO Avocado is a decent diaper. It’s a super cute print, highly absorbent, and good quality. I do wish it came with hook and loop closures and dried faster, but those are just minor doubts that I have with an otherwise excellent product. Bottom Line: Yes, I would rebuy this. Even though I prefer hook and loop, I would get another one of these diapers (the poo emoji is just too cute!).
